Favourite thing to do in my job: Make Mad Things
Friendly and interested in most things.
I live near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, next to the canal, with my husband and our daughter. We chose this house as it had a really big garage, which was important at the time as we both used to race hovercraft.
I like to paint all sorts of different things, especially portraits. I also make handbags for fun, although I now have enough, so at the moment I am making a long red evening dress, which I want to add lights into.
I run a maker space at a college where people come to make almost anything
I run a Fab Lab at a College. A Fab lab is a maker space where all sorts of people come and make all sorts of things. It is a bit like a school D T workshop. We have 3d printers, Laser cutters, CNC woodworking machines and much more. Students can come in as part of a lesson, or they can make things for projects, or their own enjoyment.
We built a hovercraft with some of the engineering students.
At the moment we are expanding into virtual reality, seeing a class full of students each in their own world is really weird.
My Typical Day: There is no such thing as a typical day. I get to college at 8.30 and I start with emails or organising things I will need to. It then get busy although I always try and make sure I stop for lunch.
There is no such thing as a typical day, that’s what I love about the job. I get in about 8.30 and try and do some emails before people turn up and distract me. We may have a class booked in to make t-shirts, laser cut Christmas decorations, Virtually reality experience. Or an Artist may be booked in to discuss making a full-size Pirate ship, or they have ceramic bees that they want to know how to make them buzz if you touch them.
One of my colleagues may show me something that they have made like a wizard’s sorting hat, and I wonder what normal people do for a living!
We are also involved with demonstrating technology to schools and teachers so we might have a Tech Tuesday Event which is a once a month zoom meeting which explains to teachers how they can use a type of technology in their classroom. Or we might have a school workshop showing children how to use augmented reality for learning. Pokémon Go is Augmented reality.
What I'd do with the money
Run STEM workshops with some Edison Robots, for lots of different age groups.
A lot of what we do is STEM engagement, with all ages, so we would want to buy something that would sum up STEM and be able to use for all ages. One of the key areas we are aiming at is digital skills so we might buy some Edison Robots. These can be coded three different ways, for different ages and capabilities. They can also be combined with Lego to make all sorts of mechanisms.
