University of Edinburgh
Researcher at a large technical company
Favourite thing to do in my job: learn new things and put them into practice.
I am Jie, currently a PhD student in the university of Edinburgh. I am passionate about lots of things but I prefer to play games or watch movies rather than go out at weekends.
I come from China and this is my sixth year in Edinburgh right now. I obtained my bachelor degree at the University of Edinburgh in mechanical and electrical engineering. Then I decided to study computer science as I feel coding is quite important in today’s society. I have a wonderful flatmate, who is also studying in Edinburgh and she majors in electrical engineering. We sometimes discuss our research to exchange our ideas on each other’s projects.
I like Asian food and I have almost tried every Chinese/Japanese restaurant in the city. I also really enjoy having brunch with my friends outdoors.
I love sitcoms, especially ones themed on science fiction. My favorite is Futurama and I still watch some episodes during weekends from time to time.
My pronouns are she/her.
I develop models to help computers understand what you are saying.
My work now is focused on speech recognition, basically it means we are trying our best to make a machine, such as your phone, to know what you are saying, like what Siri is doing. You can try to imagine how you make notes of what other people are talking about. Firstly, you hear the sound, then you are trying to match the sound to the words you have already learned, and you will note the words down if you feel the sentence makes sense. And that is exactly what we are trying to make the machines learn. Better models usually mean they can learn faster and generate more accurate words.
My Typical Day: I get to the university at 9am, reply to some emails, check the results of my work I did yesterday, have lunch, then back to my office to plan more experiments.
This is my desk in the office. As you can see, it is quite simple that I only have one computer with two big monitors. I usually come here at 9 every day. Sometimes I need to do some calculations or drawing with pen and paper to help me think better. Sometimes I use one monitor to do the writing and the other to display the result. We have a small kitchen area, where we can have food and water. I usually eat alone there at 12, but sometimes I eat with my friends too. After lunch, I come back to my desk and continue to work.
