Question: Whats the most money you have ever made?

The most money I ever made was actually not in Engineering. I had a little side business for my hobby of making personalized photo cushions and clothes for children. I also used to freelance as a designer for one of the mainstream sewing magazines. I started out with making things for family and friends and it just took off. Out the blue one day, I had an offer to buy my business. It just happened to be the right time. Business was booming and I was tired of trying to keep up. The buyout offer was enough to buy a small holiday home without a mortgage so I took it. Pleased I did as it had become a burden to the point that it was no longer a fun hobby. Although I made more money crafting, I never ever wanted to give up Engineering. Engineering is my passion.

In Engineering, the most money I’ve made personally is as a Tutor teaching niche areas of Engineering. I stick to very small groups of no more than 15 and they each pay anything from £650 to be present for that days course (depends on how technical). It quickly adds up. With tutoring, there are no real overheads. You need Public liability & indemnity insurance, which doesn’t cost a lot. I have an accountant. Since the pandemic all my courses are run through Microsoft Teams video call from home. I no longer need to hire and pay for conference rooms in hotels.
